National Seminar on World Mental Health Day on 22-10-2024
Theme: “Let’s Help Each Other: Mind Matters”
The Department of Clinical Psychology at the College of Allied Health Sciences, SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Tiruchirappalli, successfully organized the National Seminar on World Mental Health Day, themed “Let’s Help Each Other: Mind Matters”. The event took place on 22- 10-2024. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about mental health, foster discussions on the importance of collective responsibility, and promote positive mental health practices. It brought together students, faculty members to engage in this critical dialogue.
The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Ms. Gayathrie, Lecturer followed by an introductory speech by our Principal, College of Allied Health Sciences, SRMIST, TRC, Dr. K. Kumar Ebenezar, followed by a Presidential address delivered by Dr. V.P.R. Sivakumar, Asst. Director – FMHS, Dean – College of Physiotherapy and Special Address by Dr. M. Suresh, Dean, College of Occupational Therapy.
Our First Speaker – Ms. Aswini, Head and Asst. Professor, Department of Psychology, Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College, Chennai; Founder and Managing Trustee, Uyar Charitable Trust. Ms. Aswini’s presentation highlighted the importance of accessible mental health resources and the role of educational institutions in building mental health awareness. Drawing on her experience as an educator and a mental health advocate, she discussed the role of psychology departments in nurturing empathetic students who understand mental health challenges and can contribute to a supportive academic environment. Through Uyar Charitable Trust, she actively engages with communities in Chennai, focusing on providing support for vulnerable groups. Her talk reinforced the need for collaborations between academia and community-based organizations to extend mental health services to those in need.
Our Second Speaker -Mr. J. Arokiyasamy, Chairperson, Child welfare Committee, Dindigul, Counseling Psychologist, Bon Secours Arts and Science College for Women, Dindigul. Mr. J. Arokiyasamy’s session was centered on practical counseling strategies and the specific mental health needs of young adults, particularly college students. Emphasizing the importance of approachable and empathetic counseling services, he shared valuable insights on the unique pressures faced by students, such as academic stress and cultural expectations. He provided effective methods for identifying and managing mental health issues in an academic setting,
underlining the importance of creating a safe space for students to seek help without stigma. His dedication to fostering emotional resilience within student communities was both inspiring and practical.
Our Third speaker -Dr. Ramesh Boopathi, Head of Department of Psychiatry, Medical College Hospital, Tirunelveli. Dr. Ramesh Boopathi’s presentation offered a clinical perspective on mental health challenges in Family life and Sexuality. Dr. Boopathi’s insights provided a comprehensive understanding of how mental health care can be made more inclusive and accessible, especially for populations that lack awareness or resources. who emphasized the importance of mental well- being and reducing stigma surrounding mental health issues. The presentations and interactive session throughout the seminar highlighted key topics such as how to be kind towards oneself and others.
The seminar offered participants practical insights into the management of mental health issues, self-care strategies, and the development of coping skills. The seminar also encouraged open discussions, where participants shared their experiences and insights on mental health challenges in today’s society.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Janice Arul, acknowledging the efforts of the organizing committee, guest speakers, and participants for making the event a success. The seminar served as a reminder of the importance of continuous efforts to address mental health challenges and the need to support one another in our mental health journeys. Overall, the national seminar on World Mental Health Day was a resounding success, contributing to a deeper understanding of mental health issues and emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in promoting mental well-being.
