National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD),
Chennai.
About the visit
As part of the student-centric learning mechanism to enhance learning ability, a one-day
field-based learning has been organized by the Department of Clinical Psychology, College
of Allied Health Sciences, SRM Institute of Science and Technology,
Tiruchirappalli Campus to one of the most prestigious Central Government Institute
National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD),
Chennai. The visit was completed on 11th April 2023 (Tuesday) for Second-year B.Sc
Clinical Psychology students. Ms. P. Padmapriya, Tutor, Clinical Psychology coordinated
the program. Official permissions were received from the Director of the NIEPMD and the
visit was started by 9.30 am. Dr. Karthikeyan, Associate Professor and HOD from the
Department of Clinical Psychology along with other departmental staff members received
us with a warm welcome. We were guided by Mr. Amrudeen, Rehabilitation Officer from
the Department of Clinical Psychology for an institutional site tour for visiting various
departments and faculties from NIEPMD.
During the visit, we interacted with the patients especially those who stayed a long time
for rehabilitation purposes, and how the clinical psychologist played an important role in
providing mental support to patient attenders.
The one-day training included many departments’ visit to get to know about their roles in
therapy process. The following departments are:
- Department of Medical Science
- Department of Clinical Psychology
- Department of Special Education
- Department of Speech, Hearing and Communication
- Department of Adult Independent Living
- Department of Therapeutics
- Department of Social Work
Our students have enhanced knowledge about psychological services which include assessments, behavior management programs, psychotherapy, and other facilities for persons with multiple disabilities. The following session was continued and a guest lecture
by Dr. Karthikeyan with an inspiring speech about the importance of psychological services and opportunities.
OUTCOMES OF THE VISIT:
The visit helps to understand the psychological assessment through standardized
tools, behavior management programs for parents having children with multiple
disabilities.
Various training programs for the children and family members to enhance their
quality of life.
It helps to understand the Holistic approach for children with multiple disabilities.
